BerkeleyCrime Privacy Policy

Last updated: November 8th, 2025

BerkeleyCrime is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have as a user. This privacy policy applies only to the BerkeleyCrime mobile app.

1. Direct Identifiers We Do Not Collect

BerkeleyCrime does not request or store direct identifiers such as your name, email address, phone number, contacts, or precise location. The limited notification data described below is not combined with a user profile.

We do not use advertising identifiers, track your activity across other apps or websites, sell data, or use notification data for advertising or profiling.

2. Notification Preferences & Device Token

When you enable push notifications, Apple generates a randomized device token that allows us to deliver alerts. This token:

  • Is not stored with your name, email address, or another direct identifier
  • Is used only to route the notification categories you select
  • Is not used to track activity across apps or websites

We store this token solely for the purpose of delivering the specific notification categories you select (e.g., Police or Fire updates). No other information is stored alongside it.

3. Public Safety Data Usage

The app displays publicly available incident information from the City of Berkeley’s official ArcGIS public safety feeds. This data is publicly accessible and is not linked to or personalized for any individual user.

4. Children's Privacy

BerkeleyCrime is not designed to collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. While the app displays real-time public-safety information, it does not gather or store any user data.

5. Third-Party Services

BerkeleyCrime does not integrate analytics, advertising, marketing trackers, or third-party profiling tools. The only external service used is Apple Push Notification Service (APNs), which relies on the anonymous device token.

6. Data Storage & Security

Device tokens and notification preferences are stored securely on our servers and retained only while needed to provide notifications. We do not store direct identifiers with them, sell them, or use them for advertising or profiling.

7. Your Choices

  • You may disable notifications at any time in your device settings.
  • Uninstalling the app deletes all locally stored data.
  • You may request deletion of your device token at any time by contacting us.
